Historical background
Below is a brief review of the evolution of hair transplantation, from its first steps to the modern, advanced techniques used today.
- 1959: The American doctor Dr. Norman Orentreich is engaged in the study of hair transfer and transplantation from the back and side of the scalp to the areas of thinning. In 1952 he performs the first operation of its kind. In 1959 he publishes his research, entitled "Autografts in Alopecias and other Selected Dermatological Conditions". Orentreich's research proved that the transplanted hairs retained their genetic resistance to hair loss - regardless of where they were transplanted - and continued to grow for life. This point became the centre of the 'Donor Dominance' theory, which is the cornerstone of modern hair transplantation and is briefly described as follows: "Hair follicles in the fixed hair follicle region retain and transfer their genetic identity to the thinning region, and continue to grow unhindered."
- 1970: Hair transplants involve grafts of a fairly large diameter, consisting of 20-30 hair follicles and, consequently, yielding an unnatural result.
- 1980: The size of the grafts is reduced (12-20 hair follicles), but the results are naturally unsatisfactory from an aesthetic point of view.
- 1990: The scientific evolution of transplantation techniques continued and reached its current form, with the application of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), which reproduces the natural way of hair growth and can deliver a perfectly natural and perfected aesthetic result. Bernstein and Rassman, in 1995, introduced the term "Follicular Unit", arguing that hair transplantation should only be performed by hair follicle transfer, since hair follicles are the natural way of hair growth. Grafts heal within 4 to 5 days and in a week to ten days are difficult to detect. Within a few months, a hair growth cycle has been achieved and the patient has a natural appearance, which was not the case before.
- Today: hair transplantation requires careful planning and advanced aesthetic perception. Using improved techniques, one can get natural but stable results.
